Starting from NIOS 9.0.1, vNIOS for Azure instances cannot be deployed with unmanaged disks. If you have vNIOS instances on prior versions of NIOS deployed with unmanaged disks, you can migrate the instances to use managed disks.
Ensure you back up your deployment before proceeding with the migration.

> ⚠️ **Note**
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ When migrating a vNIOS instance from an unmanaged disk to a managed disk, ensure that all extensions are in the ‘Provisioning succeeded’ state. If any extension is in the ‘Failed’ state, Azure blocks the migration to maintain data integrity and platform stability, as it considers such an instance as not fully provisioned. To complete the migration successfully:
> ⚠️
> ⚠️ - Remove the failed extension from the vNIOS instance.
> ⚠️ Or
> ⚠️ - Fix the failed extension to change its state to ‘Provisioning succeeded’.

To migrate:

1. Sign in to the Microsoft Azure portal.
2. Navigate to the *Virtual machines* page and click the VM instance that must be migrated.
Details of the instance are displayed.
3. Click the following message displayed at the top of the details panel:
**<VM_instance_name> is not using Managed Disks. Migrate to Managed Disks to get more benefits.**
4. On the *Migrate to managed disks* page, click **Migrate** to start the migration process.
Note that the VM instance will be stopped and restarted after the completion of the migration.
