On the **Basics** tab of the Microsoft Azure portal, configure the basic settings for the instance you are deploying:

- In the **Project details** section complete the following:
  - **Subscription**: Select the subscription on which you want to create the virtual appliance.
  - **Resource** **group**: Either select an existing resource group that is not assigned with any resources or create a new one.  
A resource group is a collection of resources that share the same life cycle, permissions, and policies. If you are creating a new resource group, ensure to enter a unique name for this resource group. If you use the name of an existing resource group, you will see an error message.   
Note:
    - If you plan to deploy this instance in an existing resource group that already has resources, on the **Basics** tab, create a new resource group or select an empty one (with no resources), After configuring other settings, on the **Review + Create** tab, reassign the instance to a resource group of your choice.     - In a high availability (HA) setup, both HA nodes should be associated with the same resource group. Hybrid HA formed with nodes on different resource groups is not supported.
- In the **Instance details** section complete the following:
  - **Region**: From the drop-down list, select the region in which the virtual appliance resides.
  - **Availability Zone**: From the drop-down list, choose an availability zone (zone 1, 2 or 3) in which to deploy the instance. Availability Zones provide physically separate infrastructure within the same Azure region to improve resiliency and fault isolation.  
If you do not select a zone, the instance will be deployed without a zone-specific placement.
  - **NIOS** **model**: From the drop-down list, choose the vNIOS model that must be installed on the VM.
  - **NIOS** **version**: Select the NIOS version that must run on the VM instance.
  - **NIOS** **VM** **name**: Enter the VM name that should be used in the Azure portal.
  - **Password** **for** **'admin'** **user**: Enter a password for the admin user. The admin user can make changes to all configuration for this virtual appliance.
    - The password length must be between 12 to 64 characters long.
    - The password must fulfil at least any three of the following conditions: Upper case alphabetic character, lower case alphabetic character, numeric number, and special character.  
Enter the password again to confirm.

After completing the basic configuration, click **Next : VM Settings >**. The portal prompts you to configure VM settings, as described in *[Configuring VM Settings](https://infoblox-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/vniosazure/pages/37453938)*.
