As part of the Universal Asset Insights framework, on-premises discovery plays a critical role in providing visibility into network devices and activities within your local environment. By deploying components such as the NIOS Grid Connector and NIOS-X Discovery services, organizations can begin collecting real-time discovery data that feeds into the Infoblox Portal. This data is continuously analyzed to generate actionable insights into performance, usage, and security.

This section explains the high-level steps required to configure network discovery for on-premises Infoblox products. These components must be installed and operational before initiating the discovery process.

This digram provides a high-level workflow to configure discovery for on-prem sources:

Follow these steps to configure a network discovery service for on-premises Infoblox products in the Infoblox Portal:

1. **Create a Discovery Service**: Go to **Network** > **Services & Servers** > **Protocol Service**, and click **Create** to add a new discovery service. For more information, see *[Creating Discovery Services](https://infoblox-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/BloxOneInfrastructure/pages/606437586)*.  
**Open the Discovery Configuration Page**: Navigate to **Integrations > Discovery**.
2. **Select a Discovery Type**: On the **Discovery** page, select **On-Prem** as the discovery type.
3. **Select a Discovery Subtype**: choose one of the following: **NIOS-X Discovery**, **NIOS Grid Connector**, or **Passive Discovery**.
4. **Configure the Discovery Source**: Complete the configuration steps in the wizard for the selected on-premises source.
  - **NIOS-X Discovery**: Follow the wizard to configure network-based discovery for on-prem assets.   - **NIOS Grid Connector**: Set up connectivity to your NIOS Grid and appliances. For more information, see *[Getting NIOS Discovered Data](https://infoblox-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/nios90/pages/280666480)*.
  - **Passive Discovery**: Use DHCP logs and endpoint data to detect and profile assets. For more information, see *[Passive Discovery](https://infoblox-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UniversalAssetInsights/pages/1608615408)*.
5. **Sync Discovery Data**: When configuration is complete, discovery data is synchronized from the on-premises source to the Infoblox Portal.
