Universal Asset Insights employs network discovery to automate the identification of on-premises physical assets, including switches, routers, firewalls, load balancers, wireless access points, and more. This discovery process utilizes ecosystem integrations with third-party applications to identify IoT/OT devices and other network components. It is compatible with software-defined networking (SDN), software-defined wide-area networking (SD-WAN), and controller-based discovery. The system captures essential details about each asset, such as its type, the interface it connects to, MAC address, IP address, vendor, model, operating system version, and additional relevant information.

For information on the supported asset attributes for on-premises assets, see *[Discovered Asset Types and Attributes by Discovery Provider](https://infoblox-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/UniversalAssetInsights/pages/1614381557)*.

To enable Universal Asset Insights to identify on-premises assets, you must first deploy a NIOS-X Discovery server. After deployment, configure the discovery process to gather discovered data using the NIOS Grid Connector, Network Insight, or passive discovery.
