Cricket Liu’s DNS Advisor is a tool for testing DNS zones and DNS servers.  It tests both zones and servers by sending them standard DNS queries–including zone transfer requests–and analyzing the responses.  The tool runs about 90 tests, looking at areas including the consistency of zone data, adherence to configuration best practices, and the security stance of the DNS infrastructure.  After the tests have completed, the tool reports the results.  The results are categorized in one of the following statuses:

- *Severe*
- *Serious*
- *Potential* and
- *Configured correctly*

*Severe* results may indicate an imminent threat to the organization.  *Serious* results may indicate the possibility of resolution failure or other service outage.  *Potential* results are flagged as such because, in some circumstances, they indicate a problem or non-optimal configuration, but this must be evaluated by the organization.  *Configured correctly*, of course, indicates that the configuration appears to meet best practices.

The report is sorted, by default, in order of result severity, from most severe to least.  You can use the “Sorting Options” button at the top of the report to change the sorting order.  You can also use the “View Options” button at the top of the report to choose which tests are displayed by test result, and to choose whether the Description, Implication and Mitigation text is printed with the test results.
