The following table lists the recommended resource allocation for NIOS-X servers running the discovery service.

**How to use this table:** Discovery sizing is determined by CPU and RAM, not by NIOS‑X “Size” labels. The Size field applies only to Universal DDI services (DNS and DHCP) that utilize server tokens; Discovery does not utilize server tokens. For initial planning and to allow for growth, select CPU and RAM values that meet your expected device and interface counts while targeting ≤70% of maximum capacity.

**Discovery and server tokens:** NIOS-X servers utilize server tokens only when running Universal DDI services, such as DNS and DHCP. Because discovery does not require server tokens, the NIOS-X “Size” label is not a driver of Discovery performance. ## Maximum Number Limits

The NIOS-X discovery service may degrade or cease asset discovery when the maximum limit of discovered infrastructure devices (switches and routers) or interfaces is reached, whichever comes first.

- **Maximum Limit**: The total number of discovered infrastructure devices and interfaces that count toward the service capacity.
- **Infrastructure Devices**: The number of switches and routers that are polled periodically with SNMP and CLI. Endpoint devices that are not polled with SNMP or CLI are excluded from the maximum limit.
- **Interfaces**: The number of IP interfaces.

## Sizing Limits

- **Maximum Capacity**: The NIOS-X discovery service has a limit on the number of infrastructure devices it can support, as indicated in the table above. Infoblox recommends that you initially target 70% of this maximum capacity to allow room for future network growth. As usage approaches the maximum, allocate additional resources.
- **Polling Limits**: The sizing limits indicate the maximum number of devices that will be polled with SNMP and/or CLI, typically including routers and switches. If the total number of infrastructure devices exceeds the maximum limit, they will still appear in the asset database but will not be polled for network information.
- **Dedicated Services**: NIOS-X servers running the Discovery service cannot run other protocol services such as DNS or DHCP. NIOS‑X servers running the Discovery service cannot run DNS, DHCP, or other protocol services.

> 📝 The benchmarking for sizing and resource allocation was conducted in a lab environment using infrastructure devices, each with 100 interfaces. These numbers may vary when incorporating different combinations of endpoint and infrastructure devices with varying numbers of interfaces.
