A Global DNS Configuration contains all the settings required to run a NIOS-X Server as a DNS server. A DNS config profile is configured and applied locally to the NIOS-X Server. All configuration settings are inherited from the Global DNS Configuration into the DNS config profile by default. If there are no changes made to the DNS config profile, it would be an exact copy of the Global DNS Configuration. For more information, see [*Global DNS Configuration*](https://infoblox-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/BloxOneDDI/pages/186617130).

However, in some instances, you may need to configure settings that are different from the Global DNS Configuration. In such instances, you can override the values inherited into the DNS config profile. There are only two configurations available for inheritance in the DNS config profile:

- **Inherit** - this is the default setting. The values for the particular setting exactly matches the value provided in the Global DNS Configuration.
- **Override** - you can toggle the configuration to **Override** and provide alternate values. Use this setting when you want to provide a value for a setting that is different from the one specified in Global DNS Configuration

You cannot delete a DHCP config profile if it is in use by a NIOS-X Server. A DHCP config profile may be assigned to multiple NIOS-X Servers.

The DNS config profile is applied locally to a NIOS-X Server. The DNS config profile contains all the settings required for the particular NIOS-X Server. For example, an organization creates a Global DNS Configuration at the head office. The branch office can deploy a DNS server (NIOS-X Server) and inherit values from the Global DNS Configuration. For settings unique to the particular branch office, the organization creates a DNS config profile to override settings in the Global DNS Configuration and apply it to the NIOS-X Server. The following diagram shows the stage at which the DNS config profile is configured:

For example, an organization's secondary DNS server (NIOS-X Server) located in the head office may need to accept zone transfer requests from the cloud. However, the second DNS server (NIOS-X Server) at the branch office may need to be configured to accept zone transfer requests from an external primary server. The DNS config profile and the Global DNS properties are applied together as shown in the diagram:
